Rock Pools

On Tuesday the 27th April Rooms 14 and 15 went on a field trip to Cable Bay to explore the rock pools. This was the actual, hands on experience at a developing Marine Reserve - we did this as a follow-up to the virtual field trips we experienced via audio conferencing, video and computer contact to Leigh Marine Reserve and Goat Island north of Auckland. Our ambassador to the virtual trip was Pooh Bear! Doing the real thing at Cable Bay was really exciting for all, but because of our earlier studies we knew lots and could identify many sea creatures and sea weeds. Amazingly, several children found crabs "in berry" i.e. carrying rosy coloured eggs beneath their tails. The prior knowledge was invaluable.

Della, Omar and Calum are engrossed with their discoveries.

The girls from Room 15 are discussing and examining their finds.

More treasures found! I think these ones are colourful sea anemones.

Inday is fascinated with her container of hermit crabs of all different sizes.

"Dad, dad, look what I've found!" said Harrison

These Room 15 girls are sitting very still to see what will come out from under the rocks.

Arlo is after a crab.

He also found a small cushion star fish acctached to an old paua shell.

Get together time - Rooms 14 and 15.

Lunch time - cooking sausages and marshmallows over one of the open fires on the beach.

More children cooking sausages and marshmallows around another open fire on the beach.

Still cooking! And eating!

Bread and tomato sauce was popular!

Still cooking! Even the pre-schoolers could manage cooking their own lunch.
