Maori Language Week

Room 14 presented a show at assembly. We did an action song, 2 different routines using short poi, and some rakau (stick games). Everyone performed very well!

After that, one of the reading groups presented a play called "The Hungry Blackbirds". It was a very funny play.

So, well done Room 14, and thank you Helen for taking the photographs.

Room 14 Displays

Some interesting displays from the end of Term 1, showing some portraits, the LearNZ Marine Reserve display and some of the activities connected to the topic ME.

This is Room 14's version of the legend
of Kupe and te Wheke. Great graphics!

Trinity's project about ANZAC day is impressive.
We all added ANZAC projects to our project books. We learned lots, and some of us went to the ANZAC day Dawn Parade or other remembrance services.

Rock Pools

On Tuesday the 27th April Rooms 14 and 15 went on a field trip to Cable Bay to explore the rock pools. This was the actual, hands on experience at a developing Marine Reserve - we did this as a follow-up to the virtual field trips we experienced via audio conferencing, video and computer contact to Leigh Marine Reserve and Goat Island north of Auckland. Our ambassador to the virtual trip was Pooh Bear! Doing the real thing at Cable Bay was really exciting for all, but because of our earlier studies we knew lots and could identify many sea creatures and sea weeds. Amazingly, several children found crabs "in berry" i.e. carrying rosy coloured eggs beneath their tails. The prior knowledge was invaluable.

Della, Omar and Calum are engrossed with their discoveries.

The girls from Room 15 are discussing and examining their finds.

More treasures found! I think these ones are colourful sea anemones.

Inday is fascinated with her container of hermit crabs of all different sizes.

"Dad, dad, look what I've found!" said Harrison

These Room 15 girls are sitting very still to see what will come out from under the rocks.

Arlo is after a crab.

He also found a small cushion star fish acctached to an old paua shell.

Get together time - Rooms 14 and 15.

Lunch time - cooking sausages and marshmallows over one of the open fires on the beach.

More children cooking sausages and marshmallows around another open fire on the beach.

Still cooking! And eating!

Bread and tomato sauce was popular!

Still cooking! Even the pre-schoolers could manage cooking their own lunch.

Nga Tangi o te Tangata

Room 14 visited the Suter Art Gallery to view Robin Slow's paintings and to learn how this clever artist obtained the colours and ideas for his paintings. Robin lives in Golden Bay and his art works represent the ideas and music of the people of Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui (the top of the South Island).

Trinity and Ashley are intrigued by the art works. They were looking for an artistically interpreted musical instrument within the painting.

We sat and listened to Esther tell us a legend and to listen to specially chosen waiata representing the wider Nelson area. The waiata and music was performed beautifully by local musicians. We have a copy of the book of art works and a CD of the music and waiata at school.

The entrance to the gallery was arranged like the entrance to a wharenui (meeting house). We took off our shoes before entering.

Yes, there's the musical intrument in that painting! Well spotted girls!

George and Christine discuss this symbolic work of art.

Max, Callum and Leo are hard at work sketching one of the works of art.

Shayden is thoughtfully composing his sketch.

Well done Josh and Nic - your concentration, understanding and art work is a credit to you!

Della and her group of boys are really focused on their sketches.

Natasha, Ford and Ryan are enjoying the experience.

Bianca, Aimee and Paige are fascinated by the choice of painting they have decided to sketch.

Leo is creating his own version from the legend of Kupe and Te Puoho te wheke, as retold by Eshter. Great ideas Leo!

Word Processing

Room 14 children are word processing their stories using the Alpha Smart computers. They are learning to use correct fingering as for touch typing.

George is puzzling over the letters. Sometimes it's hard to understand that the upper case letter shown on the keyboard is really a lower case letter when it's used without the Shift key.

Joshua, Devon and Anne are concentrating really hard on getting it right, they're doing a great job!

Good boy Nic, you are developing really good fingering skills!

Paige said, "I feel just like a real office lady!" And she looks just like one too! Amazing concentration and aptitude for a little Year 2 child.

Well done Jackson, your word processing is getting quite fast now, and congratulations on your efforts at using the correct fingering.

Another amazing little typist! Good one Trinity -you typed a very long story and concentrated for a long time! Looking good.

Liam is showing perfect fingering skills and concentration!

Well done Leo and Callum, you're trying really hard.
