Nga Tangi o te Tangata

Room 14 visited the Suter Art Gallery to view Robin Slow's paintings and to learn how this clever artist obtained the colours and ideas for his paintings. Robin lives in Golden Bay and his art works represent the ideas and music of the people of Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui (the top of the South Island).

Trinity and Ashley are intrigued by the art works. They were looking for an artistically interpreted musical instrument within the painting.

We sat and listened to Esther tell us a legend and to listen to specially chosen waiata representing the wider Nelson area. The waiata and music was performed beautifully by local musicians. We have a copy of the book of art works and a CD of the music and waiata at school.

The entrance to the gallery was arranged like the entrance to a wharenui (meeting house). We took off our shoes before entering.
